Caribbean Cultural Theatre
While being sensitive to the linguistic, social, political and economic influences that give rise to Caribbean language and culture. Over ten years ago four Caribbean-American theatre practitioners set about fashioning a company that would not only provide an outlet for their work and creativity, but also a nurturing environment for other artists interested in work emanating from and influenced by Caribbean cultural traditions and language. Through active collaboration with both Caribbean and non-Caribbean artists of all disciplines the Caribbean Cultural Theatre has mounted work the work of Caribbean based and/or influenced writers, performers and other practitioners that both entertain and enlighten. Over the years the troupe, pulling from the talent to be found in over a dozen countries and territories, has entertained audiences within our home communities of New York City, as well as such ‘Caribbean cities’ throughout the United States as Baltimore, Hartford and Chicago. Since 2002, the company has found a home at the ART/New York – South Oxford Space facility in the heart of the cultural district of Downtown Brooklyn, NY. The company’s roster has now includes: our Caribbean Adventure with flexible programs fashioned for community groups and academic organizations, the Family Folk Series rooted in Caribbean oral traditions, Classic Caribbean Stage & Screen Series which highlights the contributions of pioneering Caribbean writer; and Modern Stage spotlighting the offerings of contemporary Caribbean/Caribbean American writers. Hiding in full view are scores of plays by dozens of early twentieth century Caribbean playwrights. Representing the dramatic legacy of the Caribbean sitting on shelves, many haven·t been produced in decades, and most never in the United States. Classic Stage highlights these writers· contributions to Caribbean theatre and world literature as well as their role as social commentators struggling with cultural identity and fashioning a Caribbean voice.
